Mudumalai National Park, Niligiris, Tamil Nadu



Mudumalai National Park is situated in the Nilgiri District of Kongu Nadu in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is nestled in the northwestern region of the Nilgiri Hills and is spread over a sprawling area of about 321 kmĀ².

About the park
The park was established in 1940. It was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2007 and is also called Madumalai Tiger Reserve. The park shares its boundary with two states - Kerala and Karnataka. It is divided into 5 ranges: Thepakadu, Masinagudi, Nellakota, Kargudi & Mudumalai.

Fauna
The animals that inhibit in this region are Bengal Tiger, Indian elephant, Indian Leopard, Gaur, Striped Hyena, Gray langur, Sambar Deer, Chital deer, Indian Giant Squirrel, Indian Spotted Chevrotain, Red Giant Flying Squirrel, etc.

Avian-Fauna
Certain rare bird species such as long-billed vulture, Indian White-rumped Vulture, Rufous bellied hawk eagle and Black-and-orange Flycatcher can be found here in Madumalai Tiger Reserve. Other bird species include crested hawk-eagle, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Golden Oriole, Brown Hawk Owl, Malabar Great Black Woodpecker, etc.

Flora
The endemic tree species of the region are Cinnamomum malabatrum, Casseria ovoides, Olea dioca and Litsea mysorensis. The prominent climbers are Gnetum ula, Sneeze Wort and Entada scandens. Tropical dry deciduous forest, tropical moist deciduous and southern tropical dry thorn forests are prime forest covers in the Mudumalai National Park.

Getting there
The closest airport is Bangalore Airport, about 35.5 km away. Nearby Mountain Railway station is the Udagamadalam station and nearest broad gauge railhead is the Coimbatore junction. By road one can reach the park via NH 67.

Several hotels, guest houses, luxury suites are found in and around Mudumalai. The important tourist sites in the reserve are Moyar River Gorge, Moyar River, Madumalai Museum, Elephant Feeding Camp, etc.
